Result of the Greek Revolution

The revolution finally removed the sultan who was a major hindrance for the development of Greece. The victory of 1830 was due to the intervention of England, France and Russia, who hence forth played a major role in the politics of Greek. Moreover, the new King of Greece being a Bavarian German prince brought German cabinet ministers and German soldiers with him. Therefore, there were new problems that had to be dealt with after the revolution of 1830.

Major changes after the revolution

  • Equality: Confiscated lands were distributed to veterans and the poor so that people could support themselves than work as hired laborers for the rich thereby reducing class based rivalry between the Greeks.
  • Unification of the Greek states: John Kolettes who belonged to the French party came up with the Megale Idea forunifying all the Greeks into one nation.
  • Wider national participation of the people in politics: Due to foreign policies of the Bravian King Otto the people and the Constitutionalist opposed the central power.
  • Military Coup and the formation of a new constitution in 1844: King Ortto was assisted by the members of the two chambers, the upper chamber of oligarchs appointed for life and a lower chamber elected by the suffrage. However, the whole system was corrupt and based on favors, though it encouraged mass participation and political involvement. There a new constitution came into being in 1844 with the help of a military coup.
  • Formation of the new government The constitutional crisis between 1862-1864 brought out the national character of the Greeks. King Otho was replaced by George I in a military coup because he failed to unify the Greeks into one nation. In addition, the constitution of 1844 replaced and the power were now in the hands of a unicameral legislature which was elected by the people at large. It also reduced the interference of the Great Powers in the political affairs of Greek thus allowing the Greeks to take reign of the political affairs of Greece.
