Social Work

The concept of charity finds roots in the major religions of the world. Social work as a profession came into existence in the Great Britain and the United States in the 19th century when poverty and other related social issues came into existence with the growth of industrialization. These issues were considered a serious threat to the quality of the society at large. Therefore people from the protestant churches in particular worked to alleviate the pains and tribulations of the people through the aid from the church and through charity from others. Social work later turned to be a professional or an academic discipline that aims at bring about social change through welfare measures. It aims at promoting the quality of living so that each individual leads of fulfilled life and thereby promote the wellbeing of the community and the society on the whole. These social workers work at the local, national and international level for achieving their goals. Social organizations that are non governmental bodies mainly depend on funds to carry out their various schemes. These organizations are professionally registered and are mostly run by professional workers who hold a degree in social work. But holding a professional degree is not mandatory in all countries. Social work which is now a systematic discipline in many universities across the globe carry out research in the area of social policy, public administration, program evaluation, international and community development. Social work as a discipline involves the understanding of different theories of human development, analyses of various social systems that would help in understanding complex situations in the society. There are large number of philanthropists today who give charity to social organizations who do social work for the welfare of the society.
