Social Welfare
All social welfare measure taken by the society for the cause of those who do not have the basic needs such as food, shelter, clothing and education and providing sufficient opportunities for them come under the broad umbrella of social welfare. It is all about reaching out to the needy and helping them through charity. Social welfare societies provide the needy with food, clothing, free education, health facilities so that they rise up to a level where they can fund for themselves. Social welfare organizations look after the age, destitute, mentally ill, delinquent children, handicapped, orphans or abused women and help them out from the trauma with the aid provided by the public. The idea of social welfare goes back to the Greek period where full citizens provided assistance to the needy. The Christian Churches were known for their social welfare measures in the medieval period and later it was the government and private agencies that carried out many welfare measure for the betterment of the society. Great Britain was known as Welfare State because of the different welfare measures that were taken up through welfare legislations. One such legislation in 1948 was the Britain's National Health Service which provided free medical treatment to all the people. It is through the aid of philanthropists that such measures could be taken up for the common cause of the general public. Other international welfare organizations that exists today are the UNICEF (United Nations Children's Fund), World Health Organization (WHO), Red Cross that are working to provide relief during distress and eradicate major social issues in the society. Besides, the United Nations is doing a yeomen service during any crisis and for the welfare of the aged, handicapped, poor, and war stricken people all over the world.
