The Reconstruction of the South comes to an End
Finally the reconstruction was complete with the election of President Rutherford B. Hayes to office in1877 - 81).Military troops were withdrawn and with the whites still continued to play a dominant role in the history of America.
Impact of Reconstruction
Although the whole aim of the reconstruction plan was s to protect the interest of the Blacks and reconstruct the wartime damages, it did not bring much progress, but powers in the hands of the powerful people in the South. Critics were not for a military rule in the South as it would lead to a martial rule in the South. Moreover, it was unjust to ask the states to accept the terms of the North that were favorable to them. Besides, they argued the South cannot be treated as an enemy as it only seceded from the Unions.
The reconstruction that was carried out in different states as a result of the Civil War did not end together. Each take took its time to end the reconstructional phase and it had far reaching impact on the society and America at large. It did cost a lot of money and the Congress felt to give up the project. However, the Emancipation Proclamation of 1863, the Freedman's Proclamation act Congress improved the condition of the Slaves to a large extent. The moderate federal groups were a logger head on the issues with the black and finally the radial views did gain a lot of the cause of the people of the southern state.
