Inalienable rights
The right to life, liberty and pursuit of happiness provided in the United States Declaration of Independence and in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights are considered to be inalienable rights that cannot be denied, taken away or transferred to the sovereign. These are the basic rights that are enjoyed by every citizen of the United States and other democratic countries. These natural rights are universal unlike legal rights and are important for an individual?s growth and happiness. The natural rights has been in existence there since the history of the Stoics in the ancient period, in the Islamic laws of the middle ages ,in the period of Protestant Reformation and the Age of Enlightenment and to the present times. This has even been discussed in detail in the 17th century by the great English philosopher John Locke in his work Social Contract. It has also been discussed by Francis Hutcheson in his work A System of Moral Philosophy in 1755.These inalienable rights they recognize the dignity and equality of all individuals which is the basis of freedom, justice and peace in the world. Thomas Pane in his famous work Rights of Man in 1791 has clearly stated that natural rights cannot be legalized through any charter as if it is done it could also be revoked under some circumstances. However, these inalienable rights have found its way into many legal documents cross the world .For instance, the Bill of Rights in 1689 as embodied by the English Parliament state that Englishmen possess certain civil and political rights. Furthermore, after the French Revolution, in the Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen in 1789 there is a mention of a set of individual and collective rights of the people. Furthermore, The European Convention on Human Rights held in Europe in 1950 aims to protect human rights and fundamental freedoms of the people. Besides, The Charter of Fundamental Rights of the European Union in 2000 is about human rights in the recent times.
