Holy Experiment

This was a theology of the Quakers in Pennsylvania under the leadership of George Fox felt that they could create a world free from political and religious authority. They believed in the inner light of spirituality could lead them to live a moral and spiritual life. They condemned war, persecution and slavery and wanted people to lead a life that is directed by the inner contemplation which is truly an inspiration from God. William Penn, owned the land between New York and Maryland which was christened Pennsylvania by the King Charles II of England after the name of his father. This place attracted people from far and wide and eventually it became very popular in England as well as in Europe. Pennsylvanian became the home of all sorts of people including the Quakers who believed in the holy experiment. William Penn also set up a liberal government, where people irrespective of gender, race and religion enjoyed liberty. He also saw to it that the Native Americans were and also treated kindly, thereby following the principles of the holy experiment. Pennsylvania was the largest of the thirteen colonies and Penn became the first city planner in the New World to construct a well planned city. His towns were green and this reflected the principles of the Quakers who valued nature and environment diversity. All his other initiatives with regard to economic development, civil and criminal laws, education were in line with the theology of the holy experiment. His plan Present and Future Peace of Europe lays emphasis on arbitration rather than war and this has been accepted as one of the objectives of the United Nation today .To keep his legacy alive, his birthday is celebrated as the U.N Day. This again is a principle of the holy experiment. However, the Holy experiment did not last long and with the French and Indian War the Holy experiment lost grounds.
