Jay Gardoqui Treaty of 1789
This treaty by John Jay with Spain for commercial advantages came to known as Jay Gardoqui treaty .The Congress had sent him to Madrid to talk terms about the closure of New Orleans to American trade. Instead Jay signed a treaty with Span ignoring the issue for which he was sent to Spain. The Congress refused to ratify the treaty and this issue remained unsolved for over ten years. The American did have problems both with the British and the Spaniards for many reasons. Some of them were related to land issues as the Americans wanted to move to expand westward that belonged to Britain and Spain. Another reason was that the Imperial Navy in the American waters was a threat to the actions related to the American Independence. In addition, there was a strong suspicion among the Americans that the Spaniards and the British were instigating the Indians against the colonists. The Confederation Government was weak with regard to foreign policies and did little to enter into a treaty with Spain with regard to the boundary issue with Florida.
