Frederick Douglas (1818-1895)
Frederick Douglas (1818-1895) was an American abolitionist, and the most prominent figures in the history of African American history . Being born into slavery, he could understand the wretched conditions of the slaves and so decided to work for their freedom. He escaped from slavery and came to New York City where he began to horn his reading and writing skills. He then became an abolitionist in order to put an end slavery in America .His association with William Lloyd, the famous abolitionist enabled him to voice his views against slavery at the Massachusetts Anti-Slavery Society's annual convention in Nantucket. Douglass. He attended and spoke in a number of Conventions on Anti-Slavery and the Seneca Falls Convention became the starting point of his early feminist movement. Here he and the others signed the Declaration of Sentiments, which called for more rights for women. He also started a newspaper called the North Star to propagate his views on Anti-Slavery .He met Abraham Lincoln in 1863 and President Andrew Johnson on the subject of suffrage for the Black Americans .It was only after the 15th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution that the slaves were given the right to vote.. He also supported the campaign of General Ulysses .S.Grant for the presidency, and on his winning the election, the U.S. army was sent to suppress the Klu Klux Klan a terrorist group that was undermining the powers of the U.S. government and suppressing the rights of the slaves. As a writer , his autobiography ,published in 1845 became the most famous book and the best seller of the time and even today is considered as a powerful narrative that provides information about the slavery that was in vogue in the South considered an was his own autobiography that was published in 1845.
