Restoration Colonies
The conflict between the King and the parliament resulted in the neglect of the colonies in the 17th century. In the Civil War that ensued Oliver Cromwell succeeded the thrown and ruled England from 1649 - 60.Monarchy was finally established and Charles II was restored to the thrown of England. The Restoration Colonies were formed out of the land grants given to proprietors who parceled pieces of land to their tenants .For instance, Carolina given by Charles II in the 17th century to the supporters who helped him come back to power. The restoration resumed the control of England over the American colonies in the East Coast, namely Carolina, New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania after a long period of 30 years. New colonies of North and South Carolina and Pennsylvania were established. Six of the 13 colonies were called Restoration colonies. To the north of the Mid Atlantic Sea, were the colonies of New York, New Jersey and Delaware, Pennsylvania North and South Carolina that were owned by a single proprietor or a group . Immigrants to this colony were promised religious tolerance and offered free land. Besides, a semi medieval government was planned where the deputies, a few noblemen exercised power. Peace and tranquility would prevail unlike the revolutionary turbulence that existed in England during this period. The Dutch became a source of challenge to the Middle Colonies. Peter Minuit, founded the New Netherlands Colony and established the port of Amsterdam. Further, Fur trade became a flourishing business along the Hudson Bay However, the Dutch let go their colonies to England who proved to be more powerful .Besides, the Dutch found the colonies to be less profitable to maintain over a period of time.
