Regionalism

As people settled down in different colonies in the New World, each region had its distinctive niche which was unique in character. The different regions were marked by different colonies like the New England colony, the Chesapeake Bay colony, the southern colonies, the middle colonies and the frontier colonies. The main differences were seen in the mode of worship, the crops, the food and culture. Initially, the colonies of Spain, France, and English failed because of increment climatic conditions, disease unsuitable land and lack of food. Jamestown on a small river near Chesapeake Bay was an English colony that was established in 1607, by the London Virginia Company. After a year, of hardship the colonists survived by planting tobacco as a cash group and trading with England. To work on large plantation, slaves were used and later after the Bacon's Rebellion in 1676, indentured servants were the major force in Virginia. New England comprised of Plymouth colony and the Massachusetts colony. By the Mayflower compact the Pilgrims (Protestant Sect) established self-government in these colonies in Plymouth colony in 1620.Later the Puritans established the Massachusetts colony in 1629.These Puritans aimed at reforming the Church of England by establishing a new church in the New World. The Puritans are responsible for the socially tight knit society and politically innovative culture that is still exists in at present in the United States. The Middle Colonies comprise of the present states of Pennsylvania, and Delaware which have a diverse religious, political, economic, and ethnic background. Besides, the lower south colonies comprised of North and South Carolina and Georgia. Each colony had a different political set up and diverse social, economic and cultural milieu that made it different from the other.
