Pequot War
The early Pequot migration took place around 1500, when a they moved from upper Hudson River valley to central eastern Connecticut. Before the Mohegan became their rivals they were a single socio-political group that later split into two groups. By 1630 there was trouble in the Connecticut valley and the Pequot aimed to hold sway at the cost of other tribes like the Wampanoag to the north, the Narragansett to the east, Mohegan to the west, and the Algonquian peoples at the present-day Long Island which were to the south. Epidemics had reduced the population of the Indian tribes and there was a power vacuum in the Connecticut valley in order to dominate the fur trade. Even the European. The Mohegan tribes were supported by the English and the Pequot tribes got the aid of the Dutch .The Pequot made an attempt to trade at Hartford after attacking a few trade and this was one of the incidents that escalated the war .Secondly ,the Pequot tribes were when the tribes of the Massachusetts Bay Colony began to manufacture wampum, which was supplied and controlled by Pequot till 1633. Following this, John Stone was killed by the Pequot in 1634 for the atrocities committed by him.In retaliation, Tatobem, a Pequot chief was killed in spite of the giving the ransom demanded for his safe release. In addition, John Oldham, a trader was attacked and his crew was killed to prevent him to trade with the Pequot. All these led to the Pequot War where in English with the help of the local Native Indians (the Narragansett and Mohegan tribes) defeated the Pequot tribe and isolated them. The Pequot were killed and those who survived were sent as slaves to Bermuda. After this war, it took them a long time for the Pequot to regain power in the region around modern Thames.
