Cognitivism

According to psychology, cognitivism is a hypothetical approach in understanding the mind applying quantitative, positivist and scientific methods that depicts mental functions as information processing models.

Cognitivism has two most important elements, and they are methodological and theoretical. In Methodological, cognitivism implements a positivist approach and psychology can be entirely explained by the use of experiment, measurement and the technical method.

This is also largely a reductionist goal, with the belief that individual components of mental function. The second is the belief that cognition consists of discrete, internal mental states whose handling can be described in terms of regulations or algorithms.

Cognitivism became the leading force in psychology in the late-20th century, substituting behaviorism as the most admired archetype for understanding mental function. Cognitive psychology is not an extensive repudiation of behaviorism, but somewhat an expansion that recognizes that mental states exist.

One of the most distinguished denigrations was that language could not be obtained purely through conditioning, and must be at least partially clarified by the survival of internal mental states. The main concerns that interest cognitive psychologists are the inner mechanisms of human thought and the course of knowing.

Many ideas and hypothesis of cognitivism can be traced back to the early decades of the twentieth century. Of all theories, the theories of Jean Piaget of Switzerland are the ones that have provided psychology with much detailed account of developmental changes in cognitive abilities.

Jean Piaget was one of the most significant cognitive psychologists. According to Piaget´s theory, human development can be summed up in terms of functions and cognitive structures. The functions are innate biological development that are identical for everyone and stay unaffected all through our lives. The structures, in distinction, changes repeatedly as the child grow.

Cognitive psychologists share with behaviourists the idea that the study of learning should be goal oriented and that learning theories should be built up from the results of empirical research. However, cognitivists oppose with the behaviourists in one critical aspect. By finding the reactions that individuals make to various stimulus conditions, cognitivists believe that they can draw assumptions about the nature of the internal cognitive processes that produce those responses.
