COGNITIVE SCIENCE
Cognitive Science is an interdisciplinary study of mind and behavior. It is a scientific study of how the mind makes use of the acquisition of knowledge and information. This branch of psychology deals with how perception, reasoning, emotion and language are represented in the brain. It encompasses various disciplines like artificial intelligence, philosophy, linguistics, anthropology, sociology and psychology. ‘Cognitive Science’ was a term coined by Christopher Longuet-Higgins in the year 1973. The main purpose of this study is to have a comprehensive understanding of the mind, which cannot be attained with studying it on a single level.
Cognitive science is a vast filed that comprises an array of topics. Some of the core subjects of cognitive science are discussed in brief:
Artificial Intelligence:
The prime goal of artificial intelligence is to impart human intelligence to computers. Computers are a widely used tool for cognitive studies. It involves the study of cognitive phenomena in machines.
Attention:
Attention is nothing but selecting important information to be processed. A human mind encounters a lot of incident and information’s and it need to selective about storing them.
Memory:
Memory permits information storage for retrieval at later times whenever required. Memory consists of short term and long term memory. Long term memory is used to store certain incidents that occur in our day to day life for a longer period of time based on the impact that creates in the mind. Cognitive science focuses on what process a mind undergoes to retrieve the long term memory.
Learning Ability:
Through learning and development we acquire knowledge and information. The spectrum of intelligence that we develop as we grow depends on the surroundings and our exposure to things around us. Cognitive science research focuses on how this mechanism takes place.
Perception:
Perception is the method of processing information from that we take in. Sense organs like eyes, ears, mouth, nose and skin are the major organs of perception. The study of cognitive science deals with how we are able to process information.
Cognitive science has sown the seeds to development of various study models for perception and behavior. This study has influenced the understanding of brain and the various mechanisms that it undergoes.
