Convex Mirror
Introduction:
Convex mirror is one of the types of curved mirrors. Mostly we use plane mirrors to get perfect and undistorted image, but for some needed conditions we are in need of curved mirrors.
What is convex mirror?
Convex mirror is also known as diverging mirror, because the reflected light rays diverge away from the mirror in opposite directions. It looks like the plane mirror bulge outwards and the outer curved surface is the reflecting surface. The good example is the outer surface of a soup spoon.
Basics needed to construct ray diagram of convex mirror:
This is the straight line drawn through the centre (midpoint of mirror) in both the directions of mirror.
This is the point where the reflected light rays from the mirror converge to a single point. The length measured between the centre of the mirror and the focal point is considered as focal length of the mirror.
This is the point considered as the centre of the circle made by the developed curve from the mirror, the developed curve is imaginary. This point always lies on the double of focal length of the mirror.
Formation of image in convex mirror:
The possibility of image formation in convex mirror is always virtual. Whatever the distance of the object from the mirror, we will get only high distorted image like extensively magnified or extensively diminished in size. As the image cannot be caught in front of the convex mirror, we can't get the focal point in front of the convex mirror. Therefore the imaginary lines drawn from the diverge reflected rays from the mirror. These two imaginary lines will coincide at a single point at the back of the mirror; this point is called focal point.
Uses of convex mirror:
As the convex mirror can cover wider field of view, it is mostly used in side mirror of vehicles.
For the same principle, it is used in automated teller machines to view the persons standing back of them.
In cameras, the use of convex mirror is to view the user's face to take self portrait.
