Medieval Philosophy

Medieval philosophy originated in the time between the classical pagan culture and the Renaissance in the philosophy of Western Europe. The study of medieval ideologies and philosophers who guided it is such a vast area which can be covered overall by concluding the geographical boundaries covered within, the ingredients that formed them, influence of Greek text and the time period including different people who took part in it. The medieval period or the middle ages is the time referred to in this philosophical approach which took place in fifteenth century with its reference as early as 1469 in written texts.

Roman Catholicism was culturally separated from its surrounding neighbors known as the Latin West. The philosophies were derived from Greek East mainly Jewish philosophy which influenced the medieval time beliefs and some borrowed from the Islamic tradition. Regional boundaries for the study include Eastern Europe, North Africa, some parts of Asia and petty lands. Influential people of the times arranged chronologically are Henry, St. Augustine, Macdonald and Kretzmann. Medieval Philosophy had various controversies hidden within it which logically begun with death of Theodosius and preferably the fall of the Western Roman Empire. It was also known as the Revival of Learning for obvious reasons.

It changes not in a chronological order but with the change of events such as the comparison of philosophical ideas compared against Christian doctrine. For arriving upon the right definition, a set of ingredients like Greek and Roman versions of the classic pagan philosophy, Christian beliefs along with Jewish and Islamic are to be mingled for relative understanding of what medieval ideology tried to convey. Without Platonist ideas, Christianity hugely influenced and its educated approach at times helped define the philosophy especially those said in the bible. Despite being contrast to Aristotle or Plato theory, it did educate but with controversy such as resurrection of the dead.

Greek texts are hard to read but its availability and some of the people who could read it translated the content for the good of all. Works of Plato were translated during Renaissance and some like Categories and On Interpretation, Posterior Analytics did lead to the evolving of the logical studies of metaphysics, mathematics with Aristotle as the superior founder. Medieval philosophy was treated with disparaging view by Greek and Roman culture but it did achieve sophistication later with the coming centuries as people became slowly erudite with knowledge.
