5S Methodology

The 5S methodology is a systematic procedure used to reduce workplace waste and optimize productivity by maintaining a workplace order. The use of visual reminders helps to achieve more consistent improvements simultaneously. This methodology “cleans up” and organizes the workplace, without altering the existing configuration, and typically puts the effect into the organization.

Concept of 5S:

The 5S's methodology introduces the concepts of workplace organization through each of the stages of the 5S process (Sort, Set in Order, Shine, Standardize and Sustain). These process techniques are applied in the job and work area. These 5S pillars provide a methodology for organizing, cleaning, developing, and sustaining a productive work environment. Every company needs to organize and maintain a system to have a smooth and efficient work flow in work areas.

This methodology encourages workers to improve their working conditions and helps them to learn to reduce waste, unplanned downtime, and in-process inventory. The 5S methodology results in significant reductions in the amount of space needed for existing operations. It also results in the organization of tools and materials into labeled and color coded storage locations, such as the well known painted outlines of tools on board.

5S implementation Approach:

5S is a cyclic methodology which consists of sort, straighten, sweep, standardize, and sustain the cycle. This ensures continuous improvement with a never ending process that gradually improves everything.

Sort: This is focused on identifying all unnecessary items from the workplace which is needed for day to day operations. It receives a red tag and placed in a central location for everyone to see and decide. These items are useful and moved rarely to storage area.

Straighten: After sorting, you need to create efficient storage methods so your items are easy to locate and use, as well as put away. It includes labeling drawers, tool racks, boxes, shelves, etc.

Sweep: Sweep means to clean, remove clutter and fix things to sustain new improvements in a daily manner. It is a good idea to establish targets before beginning sweep process. This helps to keep track everyone focused and accountable.

Standardize: After the implementation of first three 5S’s, the next one is to standardize the best practices in work area. Individuals are always in need to assign responsibility for each of the first 3S aspects.

Sustain: This aspect involved in changing habits and often most tedious of 5S methodology implementation. Changing behaviors can be difficult and the tendency to return the status and comfort of the “old way” of doing things.

Questions:

  • Define about 5S methodology and its concept.
