MARGARET NEWMAN
Biography
Margaret Newman served as caregiver for her own mother as she suffered from amyotrophic lateral sclerosis before taking profession as nurse. She did her nursing from University of Tennessee, her B.S. in medical surgery nursing from University of California, San Francisco, and her M.S. in nursing in the year 1964. She worked as a Director of nursing of a clinical research center in Joint capacity. She also served as an assistant professor in nursing department from University of Tennessee, Memphis. She finished her doctorate in Nursing in the year 1971from New York University. She worked as a teacher during the period 1971 – 1977 from New York University. She developed nursing theory when she worked as student and colleague of Nurse Dr. Martha Rogers. In the year 1978 she presented her nursing theory in New York. She taught the relationship of movement, consciousness and time. Her theory of health was developed as consciousness for expansion. She worked as nurse theorist in University of Minnesota in the year 1984. She retired from her teaching service in the year 1996.
She was awarded as a fellow in American Academy of Nursing. She was honored by both New York University and University of Tennessee. She obtained her distinguished scholar award in Nursing from New York University and Excellence award in nursing research from Sigma Theta Tau International and University of Minnesota. Later Zeta chapter of Sigma Theta Tau International started giving Margret Newman Scholar award for students performing their doctoral fellowship. Her name was included in Who’s Who American Women in the year 1983. She was appointed as Who’s Who America in the year 1996.
