Leadership And Management In Nursing Health Care

Introduction:

The individual who can organize the team and achieve the goal is said to have leadership quality. Leader motivates others to work towards goals in a sustainable way. Similarly, when an individual is capable of taking of patients and respond to them in better desired way is referred as nursing leadership quality. Manager is an individual who has the responsibility to plan and implement the plan in an organization to accomplish a specific goal. However management is said to be a component of nursing leadership. The management works in coordination with others to achieve organization goal. Nursing management is the way of achieving identified ill individuals with judicious judgments.

Nursing leadership process:

• Leadership process can be prepared deliberately
• It can also be learned
• Influence the inter personality of leader
• By proper communication leader can change the behavior of an organization
• It is cyclical process events

Types of nursing leadership:

• Formal or appointed

Legitimate authority is being assigned with administration work. It increases the impact of the followers. It helps every individual of an organization to work towards objective.

• Informal

When an authority is not given power of attorney it is referred as informal type. The community or group selects the individual as informal leader in general. It depends on seniority, special competencies, personality and age.

Characteristics of a nursing leader:

• Leader should be energetic
• They should be competitive and persistent
• They have strong responsibility
• Leader should have self confidence, common sense application and personal identity
• Should possess nursing plan skill and organizing skills
• Should accept consequences of decisions and actions
• Capable of accepting interpersonal stress
• Not frustrated to take up the responsibilities
• Avoiding delay performance
• Should influence other through his/her behavior
• Should utilize the group process
• Involve social interaction

Types of organizational structure:

• Bureaucratic
• Adhocracy
• Matrix
