Hildegard Peplau biography

Hildegard Peplau was born on 1st September in the year 1909 in Reading. She did her graduation from PA Hospital School of Nursing, Pottstown in the year 1931, her BS in psychology from Bennington College in the year 1943. She worked as an army nurse cops during Second World War in Neuropsychiatry Hospital, London. She continued her MS in psychiatric nursing in the year 1947 and ED. D in nursing in the year 1953 from Teachers College, Columbia University. She got her certification in Teachers psychoanalysis from William Alanson White Institute, New York in the year1954.

She was great contributor to mental health laws. She published her nursing theory and created Interpersonal relation theory of nursing practice in the year 1948. She witnessed injustice when she was pulled away from social life.

Phase of Hildegard Peplau theory

  • Orientation phase: The nurse patient relationship is well established. Nurse establish parameters, role, trust and preconceptions with patient
  • Identification phase: Nurse acts as client and trace the problem in patients by playing their interdependent role.
  • Exploitation phase: Trust that is developed in orientation phase is full fledged in exploitation phase so that they can solve problems easily. They also set goals for performance.
  • Resolution phase: Last phase of Hildegard Peplau theory. Patient finds security in nurse’s hands.
