Security and Privacy
Introduction:
Microsoft has invested a great deal of effort in making Word and Office more resilient. This isn't to say they won't crash—but if and when they do, you are far less likely to lose work-New Word and Office XP resiliency features include
- True Timed Recovery Save: you can finally set Word to create full-fledged backup copies of your files at timed intervals as you work. (Previously, you could only save "Auto Recover" files, which often failed to recover all the text in your documents.)
- Hang Manager and Save on Crash: You can now "break into" Word or another crashed or hung Office application, and then click a button to save all your documents. If you have an Internet connection, Word can report its crash directly to Microsoft, which may forward a solution—or companies can configure Office to report problems to their own help desk systems.
- Document Recovery Task pane: Word now provides an easy-to-use interface for choosing which documents to recover when you restart Word after a crash.
- Office Safe Mode—Just as Windows itself has a Safe Mode that allows you to access your data as you troubleshoot problems, now Word 2002 and Office XP do as well.
Security and Privacy:
MS Office Word introduces several new features that can help you secure your documents and computer against fraud, viruses, and invasion of privacy:
- You can use digital signatures in your Word documents, helping to ensure that your documents (and those you receive) are valid and have not been tampered with.
- You can set Word to remove personally identifiable information from your files (such as the author's name typically placed in the Properties dialog box. To do so, choose tools, Options, Security; then check Remove Personal Information From This File On
- You can disable (or simply not install) the Visual Basic for Applications components that macro viruses rely on to perform their dirty work.
