Different Ways to Select Cells in MS Excel

When we talk about selecting cells then directly or indirectly we mean selecting text, number or alphanumeric value present in the cell. Without selecting cells, you cannot perform any calculations in Excel. For example, if you want to find the sum of values appearing three cells then first of all, you have to select corresponding cells and then proceed ahead towards performing any calculation. In Excel, there are variety of ways to select cell; you can select a cell directly in the document window, or by go to dialog box or from cell addressing. After selecting a row, column or cell from a worksheet, you can delete the selection, copy and paste it or drag the selection to move it within the sheet or to outside the sheet selected cells are outlining in bold in the worksheet. To select a single cell just put the cursor on the cell and click on it for multiple cells selection, dick the left mouse button and then drag until the cells you want to select are outlined. If we talk technically then there are two ways to select cells, continuous and non-continuous.

Continuous Selection: When we select the cells, within a row, a column or combination of both, without leaving a single cell between the selections, then it is called continuous selection. To make a continuous selection, you have to click on a cell, hold shift button and then click on that cell to where you want to select, the selected cells will look outlined. Another way of selection, we have already discussed in the previous paragraph. You can edit the selected data, if required.

Non-Continuous Selection: It is slightly different from the continuous selection, if we select the data present in cells randomly from the worksheet then it is called as non-continuous selection. While making non-continuous selection, either select random cells vertically within a column or select cells horizontally across different columns within single common row. You cannot select cells randomly across different columns.
