Dermatology

The branch of science that deals about skin and skin related disease is referred as dermatology. It includes a very unique specialty of both surgical aspects and medical aspects. The individual who practice dermatology is referred as dermatologists. They provide special care for the skin disease in a wider range and also provide solution for cosmetic related problems of scalp, hair, skin and nails. The word dermatology was originated from French word ‘dermologie’ in the year 1764, from Latin word ‘dermatologia’ in the year 1777 and from English word in the year 1819. The word dermatology is actually derived from Greek word ‘dermatos’ meaning skin and ‘logos’ meaning study.

The school of dermatology was constructed in the year 1801 which later became Hospital Saint Louis in the Paris. The first text book on dermatology was released by Willan’s during the year 1798 – 1808. The first atlas on dermatology was introduced by Alibert’s during the year 1806 – 1814. The advancement in dermatology was introduced by Dr. Norman Orentreich in the year 1952. His researches were on transplantation of hair.

Disciplines of dermatology

• Cosmetic dermatology: Dermatologists play a major role in cosmetic surgery. Some of the dermatologists even complete their fellowships in the field of surgical anatomy. They are used to work with fillers, Botox and laser surgery. The cosmetic procedures such as face lifts, liposuction and blepharoplasty are being taught.  The American Board of dermatology has laid some guidelines.
• Dermatopathology: The dermatopathologist are specialized in pathology of skin. The dermatologist and pathologist equally contribute to this field.
• Immunodermatology: Immune related disorders for instance bullous pemphigoid, lupus and pemphigus vulgaris are treated by immunodermatologists.
• Pediatric dermatology:  The pediatric dermatologists shall assess and treat neonate skin disease and or genodermatoses. They work with pediatric population in spite of many difficulties.
