Study of engines gave the birth of thermodynamic. Thermodynamic science falls in to various types. Main branch of thermodynamic science are as follows.

  • Affinity chemistry: Branch of chemistry became famous in 1718. It deals with chemical reactions or affinity of chemicals of elements.
  • Thermo chemistry: Branch of chemistry that deals with state function of heat and temperature that are responsible for chemical transformation of elements. It is concerned with chemical reaction and heat formation. James Partington gave foundation of thermo chemistry during 1782 – 1783.
  • Thermo electricity: Branch of science that deals with heat and electricity relationship. It concerns more about heat and voltage in electrical circuits and thermoelectric effect of elements.  Thomas Seeback was the first to explore thermoelectricity during 1821 – 1822.
  • Classical thermodynamics: Branch of thermodynamics that does not deal with atomic structure and molecular models was developed in 1890s. Rudolf Clausius gave ten fundamental equations of classical thermodynamics in 1875.
  • Statistical thermodynamics: Branch of thermodynamics that deals with energy behavior of every single particle. It is also referred as statistical mechanics or statistical physics. It became prominent only in 1930s.
  • Chemical thermodynamics: Branch of thermodynamics that deals with entropy and energy of physical and chemical reactions. It is considered as weeder itinerary of chemical engineering.
  • Engineering thermodynamics: Branch of thermodynamic that deals with engineering application such as conservation of energy and entropy formation.
  • Biochemical thermodynamics: Branch of thermodynamics that deals with relationship of biochemical process and thermodynamic reactions. Keith Burton was the first to introduce biochemical thermodynamics in 1957.
