Introduction To Manufacturing Process
Terminology description:
The word manufacturing is derived from Latin word ‘manu factus’ which means made by hand. DeGarmon of 1998 states that converting some stuff in to things is referred as manufacturing. The process of converting raw materials in to certain end product through process, operations, and or manpower is referred as manufacturing process. The desired end product is supposed to be through product designing, raw material selection and the way end products are manufactured. The word manufacturing is interchanged from word production.
Present context defined manufacturing process in two ways
- Technology: The physical process and chemical process changes the size, shape, characteristics, behavior of end product or part of it. In technical terms, manufacturing process includes man power, labor jobs, machine tools and equipments.
- Economic: The process of converting raw materials in to end products gives added value to the manufacturing process. Added value refers to change in shape, size and properties of materials. Value added process shall be incorporated in starting raw material, processing of material or processed material.
Manufacturing activities:
Manufacturing process concerns about
- Economical processing method
- Customer requirements satisfaction
- New technology intervention
- Incorporation of related factors
- Increased quality
- Increased productivity
- Competitive enough to meet the sales market
- Product uniqueness
Manufacturing industries:
Manufacturing industries are of three types namely
- Primary industries: Industries that exploit natural resources. For instance mining industries, forestry, livestock, fishing, petroleum and agriculture
- Secondary industries: Output of primary industries is sold as end products by manufacturing process. For instance chemicals, computers, automobiles, automotives, electronics, equipment, plastics, textiles, ceramics, woods, furniture’s, building materials, beverages, tires, glass, food processing, equipments and machinery
- Tertiary industries: Industries that are concerned with economical sector. For instance financial services, banking, education, communication, tourism, retail trade, real estate, transportation, insurance, restaurant, hotels and government.
