History Of Internal Combustion Engine

Internal combustion engine explodes fuel with the help of piston that can move in and around the cylinder. The piston is connected to crank shaft through connecting rod. Fuel that is used for internal combustion engine is either gasoline or diesel oil. The history of heart of the automobile engine is briefed below.

Christian Huygens, Dutch physicist developed internal combustion engine with gunpowder as fuel in the year 1680. Francois Isaac de Rivaz, Switzerland scientist used fuel mixture like hydrogen and oxygen to fuel the internal combustion engine in the year 1807. He was the first to design the power steered internal combustion automobile for his own car. Unfortunately, he did not succeed in that attempt. Samuel Brown, English engineer designed old Newcomen steam engine in order to combust fuel in the year 1824. He used it to power the vehicle of Shooter’s hill located in London. Jean Joseph Etienne Lenoir, Belgian engineer got patent for his electric spark ignition internal combustion engine with the help of coal gas fuel in the year 1858. Later in 1863, Lenoir used primitive carburetor and petroleum as fuel to improve the efficiency of three wheeled wagon engine. Alphonse Beau de Rochas got patent for four stroke internal combustion engine in the year 1862. However, he could not complete the design. Siegfried Marcus, an Australian Engineer, designed one cylinder engine with the help of crude carburetor in the year 1864. He coupled this engine with his cart for 500 foot drive. Later, Marcus improved the efficacy of engine to 10 mph and the first gasoline powered internal combustion engine.

Eugen Langen and Nicholas August Otto developed efficient internal combustion engine in the year 1866. George Brayton designed unfortunate two stroke engine in the year 1873. In 1876 Nicholas August Otto got patent for his Otto cycle invention.  Dougald Clerk designed two stroke engine during the year 1876. Edouard Delamare Debouteville designed four stroke engine during the year 1883. Prototype was developed in 1885 by Daimler. Karl Benz patented gas fueled car in 1886. Wilhelm Maybach designed four stroke engine in 1890. With slow progression modern combustion engines were designed.
