Human Computer Interaction
Human Computer Interaction (HCI) has long been an active area of interest for the research community. New technological advances in electronics and communication fields have acted as a catalyst in the progress of research. Faster machines with complex computing capabilities have prompted the need of simpler systems for easy interaction with the computer. The most popular devices used for communicating with the computer are mouse, keyboard, joystick, light-pen, touch-screen etc. However, not many of these devices use the vision based processing capabilities of a computer. Latest research findings have explored immense prospect in the area of computer vision.
Most of the work on vision-based Human Computer Interaction focuses on the recognition of static hand gestures or postures.. We can use the color and spatial similarity properties to form connected regions in which all pixels have similar image properties.[3] However, both the techniques use high-end, costly gadgets and complex computation techniques for segmentation and tracking of human activities. We can use Gabor wavelet features for sampling the image, amplitude thresholding, background suppression and image representational. The computational complexities of these algorithms are high for a real-time application. Hand gestures can be considered against a uniform contrasting background^ 12] However, for online localization and tracking of body movements in an unconstrained environment, the object of interest must be isolated from a complex background quickly and effectively.
Human-Computer Interaction is the practice and the study of usability. Human-Computer Interaction is about creating and understanding software and other technology which people would want to utilize, would be able to utilize, and would find effective when it is used. The methods and tools, concept of usability to achieve it, encourage it, and measure it are now standard in the culture of the computing. Through the past 20 years, Human-Computer Interaction emerged as the main field of both computer science development and research and of behavioral science and applied social science .
