Information Systems
Information systems would refer to a discipline which relates business to computer science for benefitting a new scientific area. The theoretical foundations of information and computations help scholastic aspirants to study business models as well as algorithm processes at the same time. Digital information is gathered and analyzed by sources such as people, procedures, data, software and hardware. Computer based information systems are used by people to collect, process and distribute data. An information system which is established in an organization enhances the efficiency of the same organization. Information systems as a discipline have references to Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, Management Science and Cybernetics.
Components
The elements of information systems include computer hardware, software, database, telecommunication technology, human resources and procedures. Computer hardware might be compact and personal at home or multiple in numbers which are interconnected by hardware at organizational level which are connected with one another through powerful mainframes.
Computer software is of two types namely systems software and application software. The main systems software is known as operation software and comprises of hardware, files and graphical user interface. Application software carry out specified tasks which could be instanced by computer spread sheets and word processors.
Database is a collection of information which is organized to satisfy various criteria. Database could be illustrated as employee records or product catalogues. This list of purchases that a person did by using his credit card is another example of database.
Telecommunications are used to connect computer systems and transfer information. Various types of telecommunications are available based on Individual needs. Local Area Network or LAN connects computers within a specified building while WAN or wide area networks could connect computers in different parts of the city. Internet is a network of many networks which connects computers across the globe.
Research
Though Information Systems has been a discipline for the past three decades, its core focus is still under the debate of intellectuals. Information systems research is expected to produce more findings which are practically applicable. When researchers focus on the behavioural issues of information system, more benefits are extracted.
Problems and their solutions are conceptualized in a domain which is known as constructs. A set of propositions express relationships within the constructs to form models. A method is a set of steps which executes a task.
Research activities build an artifact to perform a specified task. The artifact is evaluated for progress and the reasons for the positive or negative effects are detailed. Artifacts are realized in the environment through instantiation.
