The Ancient World: Greece
Greece is loacted in the southeastern most regions on the European continent. Greece is defined by several of mountains, which is surrounded on all sides apart from the north by water, and endowed with several numbers of small and large islands. The Aegean and Ionian seas and the several natural harbors and deep hays along the coastlines enabled the Greek to flourish in the maritime business and to develop the culture that drew inspiration from several sources both the indigenous and foreign. The Greek world finally spread far beyond Greece itself, surrounding several settlements around the Black sea and Mediterranean seas and during the Hellenistic period, they reached till India.
The mountains that served as natural boundaries and barriers, dictated the political character of the Greece. Early times the people of Greece lived in the independent communities and they were isolated from one another by city states or Poeis. The mountains stopped large scale farming and therefore, the started looking for the place where there is lots of fertile soil. The natural resources of silver and gold were available on the island of Siphnos and in the mountains of the Thrace in the northern Greece, whereas from Laurion in Attica, the silver ore was mined. The supplies of iron ores were also availabe in the Aegean islands and on the mainland.
The Mediterranean Sea moderates Greece's climate, cooling the air during summer seasons and warmth during winter months. The summer seasons are usually dry and hot. Winters are rainy and moderate in the coastal regions and snowy and cold in the mountainous areas. The final end of the Mycenaean civilization was around 1100 B.C. marked the end of the Aegean Bronze Age. A period of severe cultural and economic depression followed.
