Texas Annexation
The 1845 Texas Annexation was annexation to U. S. of Texas’s Republic as twenty-eighth state. Mexican War in 1846-48 was quickly resulted after this step where an extra territory (called as 1848’s Mexican-Cession) was captured by United States extending nineteenth century south United States territorial from Pacific Ocean to Mexico. Though Texas claimed for eastern region of newly built territory but actually never controlled. This led to never ending conflicts between federal-government and Texas and territory of New Mexico till 1850’s Compromise.
On Mexican government’s request, Anglo Americans who are immigrants, belonging to Southern U. S., expatriated to Texas in 1820s, which searched for to increase the population in inhabited areas of north frontiers of it. There was then majority of Anglo-Americans in Texas. Mexican state, Coahuila y Texas, endorsed an idea in the year 1827 for emancipating the slaves of state. This angered numerous slaveholding colonists who moved from the South to Texas. Due to this, Texas declared independence from the Mexico, and a war was resulted with the Mexico. The war ended in the year 1836. Sam Houston was elected as Republic of Texas’s 1st president. He was elective on the platform which was in favor of annexation.
A proposal of annexation was submitted to administration of Van Buren in 1837 August by Memucan Hunt, Jr. who was minister of Texas to U. S. The administration declined the Texas proposal thinking that the annexation will result in fight with the Mexico. Being annexation’s opponent, Texas’s new president in the year1838, Mirabeau B. Lamar, withdrew the offer.
Annexation was supported by John Tyler, the president in the year 1843, by entering the negotiation with Texas’s Republic for annexation accord which was put forward to Senate. In 1844, 8th June, the accord was being defeated by 16 out of 35. Treaty got twenty-eight votes against it from twenty-nine Whig members of senate. Democratic members of senate were divided into 6 Democrats from north and 1 from south opposing treaty and 5 Democrats from north and 10 from south supporting treaty.
