Tariff Of 1828
The 1828 Tariff was law of tariff law which significantly increased duties on import widely on raw stuff and manufactures. Despite of the tremendous growth in the industries of New England, a tough competition, with the imported goods, was faced. For protecting industries, United State Government made decision to put heavy taxes on goods imported from other countries. On May 19, 1828, John Quincy Adams, president at that time of United States, signed bill in which heavy taxes were put on imported goods.
The tariff was greatly opposed by the Southerners. The bill was also known as by disparagers “Tariff of Abomination” because of the duties being so high. It was named so because of the two following reasons. Firstly, the imported goods became costly and no longer were available at reasonable rates.Secondly, because of the measures of protectionist, industries of British also decreased its raw stuff’s import from U. S.
Bill’s passing was neither appreciated by Southerners nor by some New England industries. The bill was opposed because it involved clause according to which taxes considerably increased on the raw stuff. The industries of New England were depended on this raw stuff.
It was hoped by the southerners that tariff will be reduced after the election which did not happened. John Calhoun, vice president at that time tried to prove the tariff against the interest of the Southerners but failed to do so. In the year 1832, when United States Congress completely failed in taking any remedial measures for rectification of 1828 tariff law, Southern Carolina formally announced the law void and null and also threatened of seceding from federal-government.
Final-compromise about abominations’ tariff was attained in1833. It was proposed by Kentucky’s Henry Clay to southern people that import duties will be decreased on few goods and tariff will be levied according to financial state of the areas. The southerners readily accepted this compromise and resulted in abrogation of nullification ordinance
