Northwest Ordinance

Northwest-Ordinance (officially An Ordination for Territory’s Government of U.S., Northern – West of Ohio River, which is also called as Freedom Ordinance), by the Second Continental Congress, was adopted on 13th July, 1787. It was passed under the Articles of Confederation. Northwest Ordinance hired, for Territories of Northwest, Government, listed rights bill guaranteed inside territory, and supplied methods for inclusion of states from territory to Union.

The authors of the Northwest Ordinance (credibly Nathan Dane and Rufus King), followed Jefferson’s outlined principles in 1784 Ordinance and specified in detail the plan which was later on followed resulting in expansion of country to Pacific. The formation of 1st unionized territory was the Northwestern Territory of U. S. from regions of Great-Lakes from south to River Ohio in west and north was the primary effect of the ordinance. With little alterations under Constitution, the U.S. Congress affirmed Ordinance on 7th of August, 1789.

The basic provisions which were consecrated in document are mentioned below:

  • Division of Northwestern Territory in "neither more than five nor less than three States”.
  • Three stage procedure for including new states into Union with congressionally nominated 3 judges, secretary and governor for ruling in 1st phase. One assembly which is elected and a nonvoting depute to the Congress who should be, in 2nd phase, elected, when territory’s population reach "5000 free full aged male denizens". State organization should be outlined and when population reaches 60,000 then Union memberships, in 3rd phase, be petitioned.
  • A rights bill protecting freedom of religion, right for habeas corpus’s writ, the profit of jury’s trial and many other rights of an individual. The Northwest Ordinance, in addition, encouraged forbade slavery and education. The Northwest Ordinance also protects outlawed slavery in the new territories and civil liberties.
