Women in Media

In the past few decades there have been wide range of debates about how women are represented in the media. While modernization have brought an assortment of implications to the society and though women in several spheres appear in the media yet in important political, economic and social decision making aspects they are continued to be shown injustice, perhaps terming them as inferior sections to men. Representations of women are not made in significant segments rather frequently are flaunted to market beauty products and to promote cosmetic industry. By this way Women in media are shown.

Women and their rights

Social activist when compared to previous decades take part in large numbers in protest, especially against the injustice done to women. And associations to deal with women’s rights have mushroomed all over and even in 2005 Women Media center was established in the United States. Governments are in the pursuit of sharing power with women in decision making aspects. After all these, still women are not represented in the right attitude in the media. Women in media are portrayed not equally but habitually as subordinates to men and more so as sex symbols.

Partial treatments

We can easily odd out commercials for which models do not appear on the ads even we might end up shocking to count none.  For instance, in sporting activities while men are captured in photos in most stylish and gentle manner, women and girls are photographed in what we term as ‘hot’. So where is the justice in portraying them in right ways? Women are often asked to strip off while men come around in cool blazers and stylish jackets covered fully.

In spite of the changes happening in the political environment and achievements by women in most of the fields, yet the discussion implies that we notice because these incidents are rare. Women professionals have increased throughout the world and there is no doubt in their talents irrespective of the fields but still partial treatments are habitual on the part of media. How many sports channels are interested in getting the broadcasting rights of women hockey, cricket and football and even if these are telecasted how many of us do watch?

Existing discrimination

As long as questions arise regarding discrimination, women in media will be described as mere housewives or as glamour girls to market commercials. They are also part of news when they involve in accidents, abused and become victims of patriarchal society. Women exhibiting their potentials or talents are seldom the interests of the media and though gradual growth is visible, there are social and political elements which hinder the progress.

Questions:

  • How Women’s are being portrayed by media?
  • Are women professionals increased throughout the world? True or False?
