Traditional And Modern Ethics
The study of the moral standards of life is referred to as Ethics. Ethics investigates how the moral standards affect the conduct of a person. The traditional and the modern ethics are the different faces of the same coins. So, instead of approaching them as two contradicting things, one can see the modern ethics as the development which has been stimulated by the traditional ethics. With the change of time, the notions and the idea of the ethics would also change. It is common that what was wrong yesterday would be right today and things tend to change with time.
The contribution of Christianity
Of course, ethics wouldn’t be there without philosophy since ethics is just a branch of philosophy. With the study of various customs and the values of a group, one thing that couldn’t be ignored is the contribution of Christianity to the growth of modern ethics which is the shaped and the developed form of the traditional ethics.
Plato and Aristotle
Reckoning the evolution of the traditional ethics, the traditional ethics were based on what was good and bad and what was right and wrong. In shaping the traditional ethics, the contribution of Plato and Aristotle can never be ignored. The present philosophical idea is rooted from their contributions. Plato adopted a set metric for good and morality. He concentrated in the highest form which is the form of “Good”. The form of Good and there seeking through the means of knowledge and reason the form of God.
On the other Aristotle attempted a request to the nature. According to Aristotle the main objective for the existence of human is happiness for which the ability to reason and enjoyment are the main tools. Plato’s contribution made the basis to the ideal political system, but Aristotle focused on the practical system more than the ideal system. According to him the main role of the government is to enable the citizens of the country to lead a good life for themselves. Later, Aquinas and Augustine modified the philosophies of Aristotle and Plato making God as the focal point. They have furthered their development with the metaphysics. Aristotle naturalism was developed by Hobbes.
Traditional Vs Modern Ethics
Concentrating on the difference between the traditional and the modern ethics, the traditional ethics were considered as rigid and the modern ethics were considered more flexible. There are many things that are accepted in the modern ethics which were tagged as wrong in the traditional ethics. There are observations which say that ethics are winding down and with the progression of time things are moving to something worse and becoming unethical.
