Identity Politics/the Politics of Identity:

The term ‘identity policy is referred to signify a wide range of political activity and sharing experiences of injustice of members of certain social groups, the organizing solely around belief systems, programmatic manifestoes, identity political formations  which typically aims to secure the political freedom of a constituency marginalized within its larger context. The members of the same constituency reclaim ways of understanding their distinctiveness that challenges the dominant oppressive characterizations, with the goal of greater self-determination.

Scope of Identity Politics:

The scope of political movements which may be described as identity politics is broad. The examples used in philosophical literature are predominantly of struggles within capitalist democracies. But, there are indigenous rights movements across worldwide, nationalist projects, or demands for regional self-determination use similar arguments.

There is no straightforward criterion which makes a political struggle into an example of “identity politics;” rather, than the term signifies a loose collection of political projects, each undertaken by representatives of a collective with a distinctively different social location that has hitherto been neglected, erased, or suppressed.

The term “identity politics” is something of a philosophical punching-bag for a variety of critics. It often makes challenges to fail and sufficient clear about the object of critique, using “identity politics” as a blanket description that invokes a range of tacit political failings.

Debates and criticism

Nature of the movement:

The identity politics has been applied retroactively for varying movements that long predates according to its coinage. The liberal conceptions of civil rights, argues that a liberal democracy requires a common basis for culture and society to function. The basic politics on group marginalization fractures the civil polity, and therefore work against real opportunities for ending marginalization. These movements for civil rights should aim towards the full acceptance and integration of marginalized groups into the mainstream culture, rather than, marginalization through affirmations of difference.

LGBT issues

There are few LGBT rights activists, which criticize the identity politics approach to gay rights, particularly based on the approach around the terms and concepts of queer theory. It describes some forms of identity politics as strategic essentialism that works to achieve collective goals.

Homogeneity and essentialism

The homogeneity of mainstream culture is precisely makes full acceptance impossible, and social justice movements aims not towards integration rather multicultural pluralism. It also tends towards essentialism, arguing that some of its proponents imply that gender determined traits rather than social constructions. Such criticism is most common to groups based on claims of gender, where the nature of the defining attribute is in dispute.
