Cognitive Switch Theory

Cognitive switch theory is nothing but when a child is born, it is born with sex and not gender. In the process of socialization and the influence of parents, relatives, friends and neighbors, the child becomes aware of the gender. The social role and gender identification are the characteristics of men and women who are part of a particular culture and are bound by social norms & values. As the child grows the members of the society influence a lot on the behavior and characteristics of the child and a significant role is played by the parents.

Socialization

The process of growing up in such an environment determines the character and personality of the person and thus seems to be very much responsible for what he produces. Cognitive switch theory is accepting the gender and the role, with what reasons the community gives the person. Both accepting and contradicting these concepts at certain cases produces drastic results. For men and women if they are hetero-sexual, they are termed as normal in the most of the society and differentiate people who have problem in associating opposite sex.

Norms and values of the community

The society has ruled out all other as different forms of gender and the justification is that men and women are created to complement each other and man should only be attracted to the opposite sex woman. Such rules forbids people who are attracted to same sex however a man with more female chromosomes and woman with more male chromosomes, with more feminine nature ought to be attracted to the same sex. For sex, only the physic is same but not the person and that is the difference between sex and gender which cognitive switch theory likes to indicate.

Reasoning

In fact the understanding which has developed from the society is that all other forms of gender are illegal but the biology and nature sometimes fails giving out not only physical impediments but also structural differences in the buildup. And what cognitive switch theory denotes is that rationality has been applied in distinguishing this sex and gender. And accepting such rationality and the biological set up to be a gender is what happening in the society.

While people like transgender, gay and lesbians continue to be in dismal with the gender identity and dilemma some though with different set up accept the role which are assigned by their community. Resulting not in benefits of individuals rather to live in as what they are not originally is. So it is high time we understand these facts and rationalize accordingly and not anymore to live with myths and false beliefs.
