Citizenship

According to Aristotle, citizenship is a form of status that is complied with certain rules and regulations and a citizen is a person who has got a share in both ruling and being ruled. Even citizenship is referred to the social contract theory with emphasis on the responsibilities of a citizen. For the growth and betterment of the community active citizenship is needed from the citizen.

The volunteer work and the participation of the citizens are essential for the betterment of the society. There are also some schools in certain countries which provide citizenship training for the citizens. At times the term “citizen of the world” refers to the people who have got less tie up with a particular nation and belong to so many countries. There are certain non-governmental organizations, trade organizations, and other multi-national corporations which are called as the citizen of the world.

Citizenship policies:

There are two different rights in the citizenship policy of the modern times. One is the right of blood which is called jus sanguinis and the other one is the right of soil which is called jus soli. The citizenship in jus sanguinis is granted based on the ethnicity or the ancestry whereas the citizenship in the jus soil is granted on the basis of birth status. If anyone is born in the state, then he or she would get the citizenship of the states. Many states in America go with this kind of citizenship.

Commonwealth citizenship:

From the establishment of the commonwealth nations, the notion of citizenship is also applied to common wealth citizenship. According to commonwealth citizenship norms, one can be a citizen to the commonwealth only by being a member to the commonwealth state. Of the privileges enjoyed by the commonwealth citizen one, the important ones are the privilege of enter the countries without a tourist visa and the right to work in the country expect in certain specific positions. In some countries they also give the commonwealth citizen the right to vote in the local and also in the nation elections. In extreme cases, the right to stand in the election is also provided in certain countries.

Duties of the citizen:

The duties of the citizen includes paying taxes, voting in the election, adhering to the criminal laws that are enforced by the government, and conscription which demands the enrollment of the people during the public service. There are certain which enforces compulsory military service. This notion has started during the world wars and was concentrated on the young citizen which imposed a certain period of time to serve in the military.
