Challenges of Immigration
There are people for all corners immigrating to other place, especially to places like United States which seems like the only way out for a better life. At the same time there are complex issues that are raised by the immigration. It would naturally affect the labor force, health care, Medicare and also for the family care giving. The number of foreign born babies in US has risen for the past four decades from 9.6 million to 38 million. In the 1970 the foreign population of the country was only about 4.7%, but now it has raised about 12.6%. This massive growth of the foreign population in American has become a challenging task.
Labor force:
As a result of large amount of immigrants into the United States, there are more number of foreign born individuals who accounts for the labor force in the United States. The labor share of the foreign born in United States was about 38% in 1990s but the labor share of the foreign born in the United States in 2006 was about 54%.
Immigration:
The main reason for the inflow of the workers into the country is due to the growth of demands in different segments of the labor force. The critical position in the industries and the service providers is being filled by the educated specialists in foreign countries. At the same time even there are poorly educated class people filling up the low skills area of the country.
To the needs of the U.S economy, immigration has played vital roles. Most immigrants tend to settle in the cities like Illinois, California, New York, and New Jersey. These states were home to about sixty seven percentage of the immigrants in which only forty percent of the people were natives. On the other hand, illegal immigrants were also concentrated in several parts of America. Though several countries grant asylum for those who flee from other countries, there are laws against illegal immigrants. At the same time there are researches which show that the immigrants do enjoy more welfare benefits than the native. In the year of 1994, about fifteen percent of the native households and about twenty five percent of the immigrant household have received the assistance from the government.
Policies:
The diversity policies of the country also help the integration of the immigrants. The lack of particular policies on the immigrant incorporation and the whole hearted acceptance of the immigration along with the native born American do help out in the cultural assimilation of the immigrants.
