Backlash

The meaning of the term backlash differs from field to field. In sociology, backlash means a kind of negative reaction towards a thing that has been prominent in the society. In the field of engineering, backlash means the clearance that is between two mating components.

Backlash in literature:

The term Backlash is also used in literature. Backlash is the popular novel written by Aaron Allston, the fictional character of the WildStorm comics universe. Even Susan Faludi wrote a book on Backlash: The Undeclared War against American women. Even there are many music albums with the name Backlash. The album by Nina Simone, the song by Joan Jett and the Blackhearts and the Freddie Hubbard Album carry the name Backlash.

Definition:

The dictionary defines the word as a violent or immediate whipping motion. That being the primary meaning of the word, this word is also used to mean the reaction of the antagonist toward a trend, or event, or development. It is play which has resulted from the loose connections of the mechanical elements or the gears.

Even in world wrestling entertainment, the word WWE Backlash is used as an annual event. The video game Blast Corps uses the Backlash as the demolition vehicle.

The social meaning:

With so many occurrences of the word backlash, the social meaning of the word gains prominence. It is the negative reaction towards a thing that has gained influence, popularity and prominence. It is commonly a reflection of the resentment towards the omnipresence of a certain thing. Racial discrimination, religious discrimination, and other minority groups apply this term to themselves in response to circumstances and events that are unexpected. This term was used by this group during attack of the twin towers in September 11, 2001.

The scientific meaning:

In the field of engineering this term is used to refer to the clearance between the mating components. It is also used to refer to the measure the  loss of motion and refer  due to the slackness or the clearance due to the reversal or the reestablishment of the contact.  According the theoretical point of view, the backlash is expected to be in zero but in order to prevent the jamming of things some sort of backlash is allowed. The made need of backlash in engineering is felt in the part of lubrication, errors in manufacturing, the thermal expansion and the deflection.

There are circumstances which doesn’t need backlash. In that case, backlash should be minimized. A good example can radio tuning, where an individual would be tuning backward and forward to backwards to reach the exact point. These gears won’t need backlash.
