Technical Writing
Technical Writing is an art of writing in which a style is followed to write about any technical concept in a variety of fields such as information technology, hardware, software, physics, chemistry, biotechnology, electronics, finance, aeronautics, etc. A technical writer’s job is to explain about the technology and the related information of the specified technology to the technical and non-technical people.
The purpose of technical writing is to facilitate the use of the technology or a product. A good technical writing should have three basic characteristics: Good Content, Organization and Effective Writing Style. Planning the content of writing is also important in Technical Writing. Some important points have to be noted in Technical Writing such as, understanding the audience or the users and their needs or expectations, the knowledge of the purpose of writing the content or the product, organizing thoughts and the related materials and time management to write, edit and review the content.
A Technical Writer should know how to translate a complex technical or a scientific data into a common language so that people from outside of the field can understand the writing. A successful technical writer needs fluency, language skills and vocabulary skills in the technical or scientific language. A good technical writing will influence all the audience irrespective of their knowledge. It reaches all the people who have only limited knowledge and also the technology experts through its interesting flow of words and style. A good technical writing requires certain features like, simplicity, short and clean sentences, clarity and concise presentation, effective coinage of words, top down structure (a triangle format in which the main point comes first followed by the related information or details and finally the conclusion or the point).
There are different styles of writing in the art of Technical Writing. The length of the sentences should not be too long or too short. Using a sentence with 15-20 words is an ideal way of sentence forming. Avoiding gender specification, obvious details, padding, prepositional phrases, unnecessary showing off of the linguistic abilities are also important in the writing style. Using active voice instead of passive voice is a standard of effective technical writing and helps the reader to know what does what. Some of the essential points for an effective technical writing include usage of present tense, listings or bullet styles, correct punctuations, and simple English. The style of writing depends on the audience. For example, if the topic is for technical experts the writer should follow a formal tone in his writing. Style of Writing also depends on the purpose and subject of writing.
On the whole, technical writing is the communication of an idea/thought to the intended group of readers in an easily understandable way. Being the most widely read form of written communication, this field is gaining more importance in the fast developing world. Technical writers excel in writing technology related subjects for non-technical persons as well. Though technical writing is popular and widespread, it is considered more difficult when compared to other forms of writing. This is mainly due to the fact that it has to be clear and to the point. There should not be any room for imagination in a good technical writing. If one has a good command over English and able to write on technical or science related subjects, then opportunity awaits him as a 'Technical Writer'.
