Public policy Issues:
Public policy is an effort taken by the government to address a public issue. Public policy is developed by the government through laws, decisions, regulations, and actions. The policy-making can be segregated into three parts. They are problems, players and the policy itself. The problem can be any kind of an issue that needs to be addressed. The player can be an individual or a committee of members who form a plan to address that particular issue. Policy is the final stage which is taken care by the government. The government decides in policy-making. Certain cases involve non-governmental players which includes the private sector as well. Public policy-making also involves religious leaders and leaders of cultural institutions. Public policy encompasses more than a hundred issues in it including crime, education, health, foreign policy and social welfare. Certain common issues prevailing in our society such as Alcoholism, China’s intervention and Education are being discussed under this topic.
Alcoholism is the next topic we will move on to. Getting addicted to alcoholism would prove dangerous not only to the families of drunkards but to the society as a whole. Good health depends more on what do not consume than what we consume. One has to exercise extreme caution and circumspection in what is swallowed or drunken. Continuous consumption of liquor would affect the liver first and then erode into the vitals of the human body. Besides causing fiscal loss, a drunkard reduces himself to be an object of derision in the eyes of the general public. There is everything to lose and nothing to gain by getting addicted to the evil habit of consuming alcohol.
China is always a potential threat to our Country. In the year 1962, when China invaded into the Indian soil, several lakhs of kilometers of Indian soil were covetously devoured by China and are still under its possession. This is a standing insult and defame to this country and its boastful military. Even in trade and commerce, China observes no ethics and most of its products are spurious in nature. China is the only country in the world that cares the least about other nations’ opinions. China is irritably firm in its hatred towards India and no single opportunity is lost by China in doing harm to India. India has to keep utmost vigil and caution in respect of its dealings with China.
It is the quality of Education provided to the children that would have a direct bearing upon the nation. If the Government in power does not bother about the quality of education provided to the pupils, then no enemies from other countries need to spell danger to this country. The Father of the Nation observed that ‘education without discipline is a social sin” and it is high time that our educational institutions goes back to the good old past by reintroducing moral classes in every educational institutions. Making people god fearing once again is the need of the hour. Fear of punishment at the hands of God would achieve many more things in ensuring law & order than our police stations put together can achieve. Making the people disciplined by means of quality education is like wearing shoes and attempt to ensure law and order by opening police stations is like spreading leather over pathway. Former is simple, efficacious and cost effective and the latter is idiotic, prohibitively costly and least effective.
In public policy-making process, the agencies and government officials meet to discuss the problem at hand and then alternative solutions are considered and final decisions are made regarding the best policy. The decided policy is implemented in the final stage. This implies that the needs of the society are a priority for the players involved in the policy-making process. It is also believed that the government will follow through on all decisions. But, on the contrary, the people who frame the issues to be addressed by policy often exert a huge influence on this process through their personalities, personal interests, political affiliations, etc. The players involved also are highly prejudiced. Therefore, the implementation of the policy is not as effective as expected. However, public policy remains and continues to be a vital point in addressing social concerns. It is high time that people at the helm of affairs bestow some attention on the vital problems that prevail in the society so that this country can limp back to its good old days once again.
