Juvenile Justice

Children are the future of tomorrow. Every child needs love, care, protection, nurturing, education etc. These needs come to an end when they become suspects. Their entire life becomes cumbersome when children are found to come in conflict with law.

Children under the age of eighteen are juveniles and they fall under the jurisdiction of Juvenile courts and not the adult courts.  These juveniles fall an easy prey, since many survive on begging and committing petty crimes and come in contact with the police regularly. Today, majority of the children live in deprived conditions, which are easily leading them to commit offences.

Juvenile Justice stands for the prevention, protection and rehabilitation of children within the scope of Juvenile justice system. Juvenile justice is responsible for controlling and correcting the juveniles. Juvenile justice is the most challenging and complex area of practice, since the main aim of Juvenile justice is not to punish the children who are found guilty; rather, the focus is on rehabilitation of the juveniles to make them a better human in the society.

The Government has taken many steps with regard to the juvenile justice to protect the rights of children such as the right to education, health measures and protection from abuse and exploitation. The government has also passed Juvenile Justice Act which is designed specially for the protection and rehabilitation of juveniles. This Act provides a protection for children from any ill treatment and insecurity under any circumstances.

Apart from the Act, the government has also provided rehabilitation centers for children like the   Juvenile homes, observation homes, special homes etc. Also, institutions such as Child Welfare Committee and Juvenile Justice Board have been established for rendering justice to children. These provisions under the Juvenile Justice system needs to be implemented  and followed  properly in order to give a better life to the children . Also these provisions should offer children the opportunity and confidence to face the world in future. Under juvenile justice, protection of children should be viewed as a right and not as charity or welfare or favor.

Under the juvenile justice, every convicted child should be seen equally and treated with great care and protection. The basic notion of the juvenile justice is to rehabilitate the children back into the society for a promising future which needs proper infrastructure and supervision. It is the prime duty of any counry to protect the children from all the evils through this juvenile justice, not merely in words but in deed.
