Introduction to the Humanities
The term “Humanities” refers the knowledge or intellectual studies of manmade art, cultures and disciplines using different methodologies. It can be described as a study of the disciplines like languages of ancient and modern ages, literature, law, history, religion, Fine arts, Philosophy, etc except science. Humanists are the people who involved in researching about Humanities.
As discussed earlier, studies on humanities are available in various fields from the ancient to modern ages. The studies of Classics are the foundation of the humanities and they are related to the Ancient Greek and Roman Cultures. Though it lost its popularity in 20th century, it influenced other disciplines like Philosophy and literature. History means the records or the information about the human society, institutions and the significant changes happened in the ancient ages or past. Languages studies from ancient to modern ages act as the foundations of the studies about humanities. Historians and Humanists have studied the development of languages in different period of time and the uses of languages in the forms of prose, essays, poems, drama, etc., are the significant development of languages which influence the modern age studies of humanities.
In the study of Humanities, Law - the rule, relates social sciences and humanities. Moral and ethical views of philosophy give shape to Law which is political since its created by politicians. Law is related to economics since the rules on contract, industrial law, company law and other business related laws influence wealth. Literature means the collection or sequence of words which are transformed into another form such as stories, plays and prose and poems and most of them are from imaginative and creative thoughts. The term “Honorific” refers to the respect, given to the valuable creations of literature. Arts can be classified as Performing arts and Plastic arts. In performing arts the performer uses his body, face and his/her various skills like music, dance, magic, acrobatics, etc., Plastic artists use tools or materials like paint, metal, clay, etc through which the artists make creative works.
Philosophy is part of Humanities studies, which is described as a study of problems related to the knowledge, values, justification, rational thoughts, language and mind. In the modern ages philosophy has its new forms such as logic, metaphysics and ethics. Religion is and important study of Humanities and records for the beliefs are found from Neolithic age. Worshiping nature Gods like Sun, moon and sky were some of the practices in their religion. After 6th century, new religions like Hinduism, Jainism, Taoism, Legalism, and Confucianism were developed and the religious beliefs and development lead to the foundations of Christianize, Islam, etc.
In this modern age, humanity researches are conducted and modern Humanists are collecting and preserving the valuable historical evidences and records in digital forms and the study of humanities in present age is called Digital Humanities.
