Ethical and Legal Issues in the Professions
In this modern world, every profession meets changes and challenges in all aspects and particularly, legal and ethical changes have a major impact on almost all the professions like nursing, electronics and communication, e-Commerce, businesses, marketing, health care, etc. Ethical and legal Issues occur when a professional or an organization executes something against law.
In health care profession, the practitioners like physicians, therapists, nurses, etc., have to meet ethical and legal issues as a part of their life, which are mainly related to the confidentiality of the medical technologies and the information about the patients. The medical technologies used in life-sustaining treatments for patients have caused many of the legal and ethical issues in healthcare or medical profession. The health care professionals should inform the patients about the risks and the policies of the treatment including technical problems and risks. To overcome such issues, the communications among them should be made through a secured network and all the information exchanges are encoded. The details and health records of the patients are considered as highly confidential. Patients should know that they have the rights to know the details of doctors, to verify their qualifications and other details, to know security issues and legal issues, if any. Legal acts and methods are implemented to protect the spread of confidential data about the patients of medical or healthcare professions.
In this Internet age, e-commerce and e-business professions have many legal and ethical issues in Internet service and all the transactions and operations are controlled and guided by law and legal rules and if there is a violation of law it is considered as illegal and the offenders are punished by legal system. Privacy problems, violations of copyrights, publishing offensive and illegal information, and frauds are some of the main legal and ethical issues found in the profession of e-commerce. This may result in loss of trust about the firm/company or the loss of business.
In this culturally diversified world, the views and expectations about the ethics and legal issues of various cultures are different from each other. A legal and ethical issue which is accepted by one culture may be unethical or strictly prohibited in another culture. For example, western countries give more importance to the privacy issues which are not more concerned in some Asian countries. Apart from the legal actions by Government, many e-business and e-commerce firms have developed their own ethics and rules. This is the best approach to fight the ethical and legal issues in professions which should be followed strictly by all professionals.
