In the earlier days the writers were not much concerned about the look and presentation of their writings. But with the establishment of advanced word processing techniques, the presentation and the design of a document has become an important feature of documentation process and a variety of designing and printing options are available to the writers.

The term "Document Design" refers to the concept of creating and designing documents by processing text and integrating words, images and typographic techniques which can be used for education and information services. The concept of Document Design helps the writers to accomplish their specific goals for using the text or their writings at different places like home, work, Internet etc., and in different forms like books, posters, web contents, pamphlets, brochures, Newsletters, etc.,

Document design techniques are used for different purposes. Document design can be used for product promotions like advertising designs, which is used by the organizations to promote products by giving attractive advertisements on sales, offers and services. Advertisement designs are presented and designed to get the attention of the target audience or the consumers who visit the organization’s web site.

A good Document designer should have a sound knowledge in designing. The document designer should have the ability to balance his/her intuition with his/her intellectual knowledge to get the best results in designing process. Experimentation of the designs with different combinations of type, size, formatting styles, spacing, fonts and typographic styles is also an important aspect of designing process. Suitable Text Color and the texture is the main feature of a good type setting. The differentiation between the body and display content should be very clear and this can be done by applying Size, Indentations, Weight, Different cases and Font Styles. Using other elements of designing like Illustrations, Callouts, Foot Notes, Heading and Sub Headings, Captions, Listed Styles, Quoted texts and Grid styles in appropriate places will make the document, a well designed one.

Gestalt principles and the concept of Gestalt psychology can be used as key tools by the document designers which help them to accomplish their goals.  Based on the ideas of Gestalt Principles to be a successful document designer, the designer or writer should be aware of the people’s Physiology, Psychology and the learning style of a consumer or a reader. The reader or consumer should not be diverted by the design but he should be attracted by the design and he should get interest in reading further and the style of the document should keep him/her focused till the end of his reading.
