Digital Divide

Digital Divide is a term that refers to the divergence between people who have access to the advanced digital and communication or information technologies. It also refers to the people who have fewer resources or no resources to access the above-mentioned types of technologies. This term, hence, is applicable to the digital citizens who use their knowledge, ability and skills to access the advanced technologies and the people who do not have access to the digital technologies. In the same way, the divergence is found between the facilities to access the communication technologies of developed countries and industrially developing countries. This phenomenon is called as Global Digital Divide.

The Global Digital Divide is different from the concept of Digital Divide. The development of technologies of Internet and Communication is not even all over the world. In a country, if there is a difference in the access of Internet Communication between the rural and urbanized areas, there comes the effect of Digital Divide. The same disparity between the developing and well-developed nations is the concept of Global Digital Divide. Global Digital Divide concept leads to the inequality of accessing goods and services that are available through advanced technologies. This is a disadvantage to the people who have poor education and use limited access of services and goods and hence cannot get the full benefits of this information age. People who have access to computers and Internet technologies are getting improved education and higher wages. Thus, the Global Digital Divide concept influences people all over the world in the different levels of their access to the current technologies.

Global digital divide influences most of the Third World Countries than the well developed First World Countries. Some of the advanced technologies found in First World Countries and not in Third World Countries are:

  • Well developed Social Networking and E-Communities
  • Advanced Online Research Systems like WestLaw, LexisNexis, ProQuest, etc.
  • Electronic Readers
  • Wide Spread Internet Access

E-government

Although the continuation of a Digital Divide is not recognized, the technological gap or the differences between the various levels are relatively transient. So, in any case this Global Digital Divide should soon fade away from this technological developing world and in the future people will not need any high-tech skills or education to access the Communication Systems such as Internet as they will become a part of e-commerce. Most of the developing countries have their own projects that have been implemented in various levels to overcome Digital Divide.
