Contemporary Literature

Contemporary Literature is the development and evolution of literary creations after the period of World War II. From this period and to the early 20th century, many literary movements have been established and they have contributed their significant part to the field of literature.

Objective poets are the group of poets found in the late modernism period (in the 1930s) and this period was greatly influenced by American poets like Ezra Pound and William Carlos Williams. Zukofsky also followed these styles and the interesting aspect of these verses, is the usage of simple, everyday words. Charles Reznikoff, Geaorge Oppen, Carl Rakosi, Basil Bunting and Lorine Niedecker are some of the important poets of this period.

In the 1950s, a group of American writers called the Beat Generation developed the school of bohemian hedonists, an approach with non-conformity and creativity. Their works supported and highlighted the spontaneity, emotions and the worldly experiences. They were often based on the spiritual aspects of life, and these models used the ideas of Buddhism, Catholicism and Judaism. Back Mountain Poets (1933-1956) developed an excellent curriculum in the studies on literature and arts. Projective verse was developed by Charles Olson which replaced the closed poetic forms with its openness feature of poetic style. Some important poets who followed this style are Larry Eigner, Robert Duncan, Ed Dorn, Deneise Levetov and Donald Allen.

Poems about the poet’s personal life like mental illness, feelings, thoughts and mind were written in Confessional Poetry in the period from 1950 to 1960. During the same period, New York School was formed with a group of people from various fine arts. Based on surrealism many contemporary art movements of action, painting, jazz, music, dance and expressionism were formed in this period. John Ashbery, Kenneth Koch, James Schuyler and Barbara Guest are some of the great poets associated with the New York school. Loose poetry movement from the 1960s to 1970s in Britain, is called as the British Poetry Revival which was a cause of conservative approach to poetry. The poets like Roy fisher, Geal Turnball, Ian Hamilton Eric Mottram, and Peter Finch from the Movement contributed a wide range of model poems and their works formed and integration between Modernism and British Poetry.

New wave science fictions of 1960s, Language Poems of 1970s, Cyberpunk, Maximalism, New Formalism and Poetry slam of the 80s are some of the styles found in the history of Contemporary Literature. In 1990s the experiments of cyberpunk writers led to the ideas of new varieties of Fictional Works of Post cyberpunk. Weird fictions are the speculative fiction works in the early 20th century. Studies on Contemporary Literature help to know the evolution of the literature in modern days which have the major impact of Literature works and models of Contemporary Literature.
