20th Century Fine Arts
It’s in the 20th century that the forms of fine arts such as painting, sculpture, literature, architecture, drama, dance and music were developed and they gave a new dimension to fine arts. Evolution of fine arts can be classified as the early 20th century fine arts and the late 20th century fine arts.
In the early 20th century, between 1901 and 1906, the paintings of great artists like Vincent Van Gogh, Paul Gaughin and Paul Cezanne were recognized as great modern art. Many painters followed the new modern art and they experimented these techniques to form new art styles. Fauvism is considered as the most important style of the 20th century fine arts in which only simple lines are used to draw the subject and brilliant colors were used over the representational values of the painting. Henri Matisse and André Rain used forceful colors in their painting styles and they thought beyond the formal boundaries of painting to form a clumsy style. And in this movement, Matisse was the dominant one. Their followers Albert Marquet, Charles Camoin, Louis Valtat, Maurice Marinot, Jeam Puy, Maurice de Vlaminkk, Alfred Maurer and various other painters of Fauvism grouped together and they formed a new movement in the painting history called Cubism.
Sculpture is an art work with three dimensions, and in the 20th century the traditional sculpture ideas were completely replaced by the concept of abstract designs. In 1960, minimalist culture emerged and they included the geometric and cubic forms which were made from industrial materials and they had the characteristics such as uniformity and repetition. Neoclassicism - II happened in the period between the First and the Second World War and it was a great movement of the 20th century and it included music, literature and poem. The 20th century classical music had a variety of styles and Neo-classical music has its origin from the Baroque, classical and romantic music periods.
Modernism of the 20th century contributed a significant part in architecture and the origin of modern architecture started from the architectural models of Berthold Luberkin (1901-1990), the founder of Tecton group. In this movement, scientific and analytical methods were applied in their design. Some other important movements are Synchronism, Futurism, Dadaism, Bauhaus, Neo-Dada, Pop Art, Neo-Expressionism and Lyrical Abstraction. Modern architecture has the characteristics like minimal use of ornamentation, using industrial made part, using metal and concrete, functional and remodeling of traditional architectural styles.
Post modernist thoughts are the deliberate departure from modern approaches which were dominating the field of Fine arts in the mid-20th centuries. Post modernism evolved in the later 20th century influenced the field of Fine Arts including literature, sociology, music and visual arts.
