Rotating Biological Contractors

Rotating biological contractors or RBC is a type of secondary biological waste water treatment followed by primary treatment of wastewater. The grits and residual solids can be easily removed in primary screening treatment after which follows settlement tank. The biological medium is in contact with waste water in rotational biological contractor to remove the contaminants before disposal to natural environment. RBC includes a series of discs in parallel and is mounted on shaft which is rotating and is supported by the surface of waste water. Over the discs microorganisms starts growing which result in degradation of pollutants in waste water. Aeration to the rotating discs is only by exposing the media to the atmospheric air for effective degradation.

Rotational biological contractors were first used in Germany in the year 1960 in the United States for petroleum and diary industries.  RBC is a type of attached growth process. It includes the following components

  • Diameter of plastic sheet: 3 – 4 m
  • Thickness of plastic sheet: 10 mm
  • Length of shaft: 8 – 8.5 m
  • Length of module: 7.6 – 8 m
  • Shaft power: 40 kW
  • Shaft rotation: 1 – 2 rpm
  • Disc rotation: 1 – 2 rpm
  • Film thickness: 3 – 4 mm
  • Media: Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) or plastic media
  • Number of discs: 4 – 6
  • Hydraulic loading: 40 – 60 l/day/m2
  • Organic loading:  0.05 – 0.06 l/day/m2
  • Submergence of disc: 45 – 95 % of design
  • Detention time: Continuous process

Secondary Clarification:

The design of secondary clarification treatment is much more similar to primary clarification. In order to achieve maximum aeration, sludge should be generated whenever it is formed. Hence by this rapid generation of sludge prevent the anaerobic condition in the rotational biological contractor system. When the gas is released then the sludge floats. Sludge handling should be effective in maintaining greater range of waste water flow.
