Inorganic Chemical Characteristics: pH

pH of a chemical compound is directly related to acidic or basic nature of solution. The particular pH value is associated with the acidic and basic characteristics of substances. The pH scale correlation directly relates the quantity of acid in a chemical compound. The solution with pH less than 7 is considered as an acid. The acidic compound seems to have bitter and sour taste and it burns the skin, if the solution is highly concentrated. The solution with pH 7 is said to be neutral solution. The solution is neither acidic nor basic in nature.  The solution whose pH is more than 7 is referred as basic in nature. Basic solutions are also referred as alkaline solutions. Bases can damage skin and thereby it sloughs off. The interaction of acid and base shall result in the formation of water and salt. For instance an acid like hydrochloric acid reacts with a base like sodium hydroxide to form sodium chloride and water. There should be proper balance between acid and base inside the body tissues and fluids.

The pH of blood measures the relative degree of alkalinity and acidity in the body. The buffering systems of human body are retained in renal system and respiratory system. It helps in easy maintenance of acid base balance. Each and every second, the pH of blood should be maintained else it may result in damage to organ systems. Usually the pH of blood is around 7.35 – 7.45. If the pH is less than 7.35 then blood is acidic in nature and if the pH is more than 7.45 then blood is alkaline in its nature. The balance between acid and base is more prevalent in respiratory system and renal system. The process of acid – base balance helps in regulation of body pH.
