Wire Spring Relay

A wire spring relay is the kind of electrically operated switch or relay mainly produced by Western Electric Company. This relay is mainly used for Bell System in the electromechanical telephone exchanges. Today this relay is used is all around the world but the highest user is Japan. The wire spring relay has a lot of springs which are made from phosphor bronze drawn wires  instead of cut from the  flat sheet metal like in their old version flat spring relay. This relay has better reliability than other kinds of relays. This type of relays is considered to be the most suitable relay for computing and logic functions. The wire spring relays are widely used in the markers that were specific purpose computer system which is utilized to route calls in the crossbar relay or switch central offices.

The wire spring relay comprises two important parts such as the contacts and the electromagnet. The electromagnet could have resistance capacity between 12 to 200 ohms and it is generally made to operate satisfactorily at a general telephony voltage, such as 48 or 24 volts. The electromagnet could also be changed or modified, by insertion of the metallic slugs in order to create a short delay before holding or pulling in the   contacts in place temporarily after power is removed. The wire spring relay generally has several contacts and each plated with the precious metals precious metals like palladium. Every contact is either a moving contact or fixed contact and it is made from the short piece of wire.  Most of the wire spring relays produced in 1960s had about 12 fixed contacts. Every fixed contact is in the shape of the square box which is mounted on the end of the thick wire stem.
